Background:
Meadowcreek Borzoi came into being in 1971 with the acquisition of Robin's first Borzoi, Nicholas Raskolnikov. With "Niki" came our opportunity to closely observe and begin to understand the lovely nature of the Borzoi, which in turn, inspired in us a lifelong commitment to the Borzoi breed. "Niki" is pictured in memoriam, along with all of Our Past Borzoi. Years later, we decided to foster/adopt several rescue dogs in cooperation with the Borzoi Club of California. After moving to Oregon in 1977, we became acquainted with our new "neighbors," Lyle & Phydelma Gillette (Rancho Gabriel), the pioneers of modern-day lure coursing. With the eventual acquisition of several of their dogs, we also became active in the sport (as well as confirmation showing). For several years we participated with them in forming the Borzoi Club of Western Oregon, which became an ASFA affiliated club and held AKC sanctioned matches but, unfortunately, did not have enough lasting interest to survive. In the 1980's our Borzoi activities were quite limited...our children were young and required much of our attention. As the children grew older, we were able to begin exhibiting our Borzoi once again. We were then fortunate enough to have acquired several outstanding Borzoi from well-respected breeders. Of these breeders, Michelle Luckey-Rowton of Kenai Borzoi, and Patricia Murphy of Oaklara Borzoi have become our mentors. In the early 90's our daughter, Lesley, took to junior showmanship and later to obedience, coursing and exhibiting in the breed ring, and since, has participated with us in the responsibilities of conscientious Borzoi breeders. In mid-2002 the entire family moved cross-country, from Oregon to New Hampshire. The move was quite a change for all of us, we took a break from participating in many Borzoi-related venues as there was much re-establishing to be done. In 2006, our daughter Lesley married our new son-in-law Dan and they not only added a young Rhodesian Ridgeback to their family, but also our first grandchild! Last year we decided to open a gift boutique/garden shop/espresso cafe...needless to say, life has been very busy! As things begin to settle down again, we hope to have our hounds participating in more events...for now, we attend prominent shows and AKC lure trials as time permits.
At Present:
We have bred three litters to date, and are expecting our forth in July 2008. Of these three litters there are 3 multiple sweepstakes winners, 4 specialty winners, 2 Gazehound Racing Champions, 1 Superior Gazehound Racing Champion, 6 American Champions, 1 Canadian Champion, 1 AKC Field Champion, 1 Companion Dog/Rally Novice and several Junior Coursers. Together, we are Life Members of Klamath Dog Fanciers. We have been Borzoi Club of America members for over 20 years and had been members of Borzoi Club of Northern California for 6 years and Borzoi Club of New England for 3 years.
Health Providers:
All Borzoi owned by Meadowcreek, while living in Oregon, had been regularly cared for by the doctors of Baumann Veterinary Clinic. Currently in New Hampshire, they are cared for by Dr. Janet Merrill of Wilton Animal Hospital. Their holistic care provider is Marina Zacharias, Natural Pet Care Specialist. All dogs used to further our breeding efforts obtain recommended health certifications as set forth for Borzoi by the AKC-sponsored Canine Health Information Center (CHIC).
Nutrition:
We combine various kibbles and canned foods, including Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul, Merrick, Evo, Nutro and Pedigree. Old Mother Hubbard biscuits are a daily treat, while raw beef marrow bones and raw chicken thighs are additional weekly treats. From our own kitchen, we feed chicken & turkey, ground beef, ground turkey, mixed veggies, barley/oats and rice. Our dogs occasionally receive light supplementation of Spectra Vitamin & fish or flax seed oil.
Training:
Each of our Borzoi pups attend at least 2 puppy training classes prior to their departure from our kennel, while our maturing youngsters continue on through beginning-level obedience training. Each of our current Borzoi have been individually trained by various members of our family through the expert guidance of our friends at Double-C Dog Training in Klamath Falls, OR. Thus far our newest additions have been trained at All Dogs Gym in Manchester, NH.
Invitation:
Currently we can be seen at shows, coursing events and race meets mainly in the northeast, but occasionally, at Borzoi specialty events elsewhere in the U.S. Visitors to the New England area are more than welcome to pay us a visit...please feel free to give us a call so we may arrange for you to be our guest.
